HTTYD2

So, HTTYD2 is out, and it is amazing. So glad I managed to stay spoiler-free before watching it. Dodging trailers is hard though - had to listen to loud music to drown it out when I went to see other films recently... Having gone back and watched the trailer now AFTER the movie, that was a very good idea.

I also recently finished the TV series, which was... less amazing. In hindsight, I think I would have rathered sticking to just watching the movies. '¬' And I still really wish I could have seen the original movie at the cinema. Maybe the Astor will show it sometime.

Random thoughts on the movie. SPOILERS AHOY.

- I think I still like the first movie better overall. But they're different. This is still good.
- I just love watching the characters interact. Especially Hiccup and Toothless. They could have a whole movie of them just having fun together, and I would watch it and love it.
- Hiccup and Astrid's relationship is sweet. (Also, thought it was so cute that she did those braids in his hair just on a whim, and he left it like that for the rest of the movie.)
-- The other guys fighting over Ruffnut, not so cute. It was funny at first but the joke went on too long, especially her crush on... whats-his-name? The new guy?
- The music wasn't as memorable. The first film has some lovely sequences with music (eg. the flying scenes and "forbidden friendship" sequence) but this didn't have any that are sticking in my mind, after one viewing at least. Stoick and Valka's song was lovely though.
-- Listening to the soundtrack now. Disappointed that Stoick and Valka's song is the in-movie version with Gobber's interruptions. Bah.
--- Starting to notice the new tune being worked into the score. Will need a few more listen-throughs (and another viewing of the film) while I get my head around it to appreciate the music more.
- I brought tissues. I needed them. ;_;

Additional thoughts after second viewing:
- Okay, so Toothless is apparently an Alpha Dragon now. What does this actually mean - the others we've seen so far are the Red Death and the two Bewilderbeasts, all huge creatures. Is that cause or effect?
- I've been humming "For the Dancing and the Dreaming" all day. It really is a beautiful song.
- TV series is officially out-of-my-personal-canon unless there's a really good reason for me to change my mind. I just don't like how the characters act in the series compared to the movies+specials. And the world just feels disjointed somehow; the movies seem much more natural.

And just when I thought it was safe to read things without getting spoiled, I read an article where the director was talking about how the third movie is going to end. Vaguely, but enough to have me thinking and twisting it about until I get to see it. Which is going to be YEARS. ARGH.

So, according to this article, the ending is going to tie in with what is actually the books' "ending announced at the start", Hiccup as a grown man in a world from which dragons have almost completely disappeared. Which is just... sad on so many levels. It's such a beautiful world, the one we see in the films, and to see it lost....
And no matter which way I twist it, it's going to be a sad ending for Hiccup and Toothless. Is Toothless left behind, the last dragon in the world? Will he die? Will Hiccup and Toothless go together to - wherever it is that dragons go when they disappear from the world - leaving Astrid behind? (Valka says that Hiccup has the "soul of a dragon", so perhaps that is significant....) Perhaps in the final scene, he will pass on the chiefhood to his son (or daughter?), and depart with Toothless, and the last thing we see is them in the sheer joy of flight once more...

...I think I'm going to need a whole box of tissues for this film. ;_;

....in fact I seriously need tissues NOW. This is about the third time I've found myself on the verge of tears thinking about what might happen in the ending. It amazes me that a story can affect me at this level. and I have to be stuck in this limbo for another two years or something until the movie comes out.

...

On a much brighter note, can we please have Hiccup and Astrid's wedding happen in the third film? Or as one of the higher-quality specials like Gift of the Night Fury. It would be so lovely.
