12:35 am - eGames / Museum
eGames Expo was prettymuch a complete waste of time (other than seeing Sefie and Luke!) and certainly a complete waste of money - not much on, no interesting events... so I ended up leaving and going to the Museum instead. Far more interesting and useful. Also cheaper. And air-conditioned.

The dinosaur exhibit was pretty cool, the live bugs display was really interesting, and my favourite was the rainforest area - if you haven't been there, it's a large outdoor "room" with netting walls, with a rainforest and pond, and there are birds in it - more like the Zoo than a museum, really. So I got to see a bower-bird, and finches, and those gorgeous blue-headed wrens - one flew down right in front of me. ^_^ Had a lovely time.

11:49 pm - Fullmetal Alchemist - chapter 100 / episode 26 / new opening/ending
Chapter 100 was not quite as epic as I was hoping it would be; however it's set up for MASSIVE EPIC next time, doubly so if what I suspect is true... cut for spoilerCollapse )

Episode 26 was done pretty well. I'm much happier with it than the previous Really Important Manga Scene (the one with Winry and Scar), which was quite frankly horribly done.

Also, new opening/ending for the anime:

Opening - I like the song (I've been listening to the full version lately, and the lyrics suit the show well) but the animation is weird. Pretty static, and doesn't seem well-timed with the song at some points. Lots of forehinting the next arc again, though not as nicely done as the previous opening.

Ending - didn't like the song at first, but it's growing on me. Like the third ending for the first anime, it's focused on Winry - but so different! It really highlights how differently she's being used in this story compared to the first anime. She's not just moping around and occasionally getting used for fanservice.

Waiting for an auction to finish on eBay, so I started reading forums to fill in the time until the last few minutes.

...guess who got totally engrossed in what she was reading and lost track of time? X__x

8:52 pm - Time for Plan B
There's absolutely no way I could get my Pamela costume made in time - and certainly not with the amount of care and detail it deserves - so Plan B is, as I stumbled across while ranting last night, a prettified Katara dress. Pity about all the poplin but I don't have time to remake the whole thing...

Went to Spotlight today to get some fabric to make a skirt. Came home with more poplin and bemsilk lining - the only stuff I found in a suitable navy colour - and assorted bits and pieces. Cost $50. Got home and found that I'd been mailed a "spend $50 get $10 off" card. X__x

Question:</i> do you guys think it will look alright if I actually use the 'lining' fabric as the outer layer? It's prettier.

11:53 pm - *is screwed*
Damn damn flippity heckity damn I HAVE LEFT THIS FAR TOO LATE and made prettymuch no practical progress tonight AT ALL and I am NOT IN A GOOD MOOD.

At the current rate I'll be lucky to get the first layer of the dress done tomorrow - especially since I need to wash my hair (personally I wouldn't bother but Mum absolutely won't let me get away with it) which is going to cost me crucial sewing time - because it's all crucial sewing time at this point. Never mind the loss of crucial sleep time...

Also my wig hasn't arrived yet so I really really hope it turns up tomorrow (so I can stop stressing about it). At the very least if I get the lavender dress finished I can go as a slightly-inaccurate Amalthea from The Last Unicorn.

If not... I really don't know what to do. None of my existing cosplays are very formal-ish... Hotaru is probably closest but I probably don't fit into that costume anymore... maybe I can reuse Katara if I make a skirt to go under the dress, and a prettier sash (perhaps I can use the floral damask I bought for Pamela's dress) - pity the dress is made of poplin though. X_x

Must go to bed now - I need all the sleep I can get right now.

9:16 pm - Cosplay
Cosplay progress as of yesterday night:

...pathetically littleCollapse )
The petticoat really does need more work - messed around with it more tonight without much luck; I really need to sew other stuff instead. At least it's reasonably wearable for now.

10:18 pm - Cosplay advice needed
I'm only just now starting to work on my Pamela cosplay. Have been putting it off because I tend to avoid doing things I'm uncertain about, and I'm uncertain about prettymuch every single aspect of the costume at the moment... -_-;;;

Anyway, the really important thing I need advice about is wigs. I really should have bought one ages ago, but uncertainty and procrastination are a deadly combined force...

So I've been looking on eBay and I've found a few I'm considering:

From store "Professional Only":
Possibility 1
Possibility 2 (I'm leaning towards this one... what would the "35 inch" measurement be from? Top of the head? Otherwise it'd probably be too long for me...)

From "Wig Fashion":
Possibility 3 (probably a bit dark, although the style is right.)

From "WigStylist":
Possibility 4
Possibility 5

So... does anyone have any opinions on those sellers? Are they good/bad/all-much-the-same? (Fast shipping? ...I can't believe how close it is to Amaranth already now.)

Also... I'm not sure what fabric I should use for the dress. I've ended up with large amounts of both faille and satin, because I bought the faille first and then found really nice satin on clearance ($6/m instead of $20!) when Spotlight had their "spend $100, get $40 back" offer and I was buying other fabric already so it actually cost -$4...
Anyway, these are the fabrics I've got: with faille or satin. The satin is prettier but the faille is closer to the right colour (fabric test here). That, and I get to make "made of fail(le)" comments which may be highly applicable at this current rate of progress...

10:51 pm - cosplay (not-)sewing
I really should be cosplay sewing. That is, I nominally *am* cosplay sewing at the minute, but I'm just not focused. Last-minute panic is not setting in yet, and thus I am still fretting over unimportant details. In this case, hemming the neck on Ico's shirt. It's not even visible, but it's going to be straight and neat if it takes all night! ...except it's kinda not working (having trouble centring it, scorched the facing fabric - luckily not the actual shirt though - while ironing it, etc etc etc), so I keep wandering off.

The other reason I'm semi-conciously avoiding working hard on it is that, due to having barely-enough fabric, I'm going to have to cut up the old shirt to make sleeves for the new one. If it doesn't get totally finished, I don't have a shirt at all. So of course the solution is to waste all the time required to finish the new shirt....

Stupid procrastination instincts. X__x

3:11 pm
It's been a quiet morning and quiet afternoon, but in Period 3 I was suddenly needed in three places all at once. After I'd sorted it all out I got a phonecall from another teacher asking for a computer cable, and on the way to drop it off a student came up and said the teacher needed help. So I fixed that and went back and sat down to eat my lunch, the phone rang again, and as soon as I got off the phone there were two students waiting for me to come and help their teacher...

On the plus side, there were a couple of girls in during recess who told me I was their "favourite library teacher" so I am feeling very special right now. ^_^

5:09 pm - Dessert pizza toast ^_^
I like making pizza toast under the griller (it's quicker than in the oven and gives much the same result, for margherita pizza at least) and I thought I'd experiment with making dessert pizza!

Before/after cooking:

Top half: Nutella with marshmallow or peanuts
Bottom half: Jam and coconut

I decided to do a few different combos on the one piece of toast, so I wouldn't be wasting too much if something didn't cook nicely... but it all did!

The jam was the best one - kinda like a coconut tart. Will definitely be making this again! ^_^

1:10 pm - misc fandom stuff
There were supposed to be photos of the Avatar movie cast coming out "by the end of June" but they haven't appeared yet so I keep checking the forum to see if they've come out in the ten minutes since I last checked.... -_-;

Apparently Ling (from FmA) has the same voice actor as Riku from Kingdom Hearts. I find this very amusing as I was drawing parallels between them all through playing KH2.

Also, thanks to the joys of op-shopping, I now have a video of the "Legend of Zelda" cartoon and also "Warriors of the Wind", the original hack-dub of Nausicaä. Haven't watched them yet; might not watch Warriors at all (apparently Miyazaki has asked everyone to forget all about it), but it's kinda cool to have. Not sure whether I should keep them or possibly put them in for auction at Manifest.

11:38 am - w00t!
Last night's episode of FmA had an ad for upcoming episodes. FIRST LOOK AT XINGESE GROUP YAY!

I am SO cosplaying Mei again for Manifest this year. (People will actually recognise the character this time!) I'll have to remake the shirt and pants though; looks like they're a darker shade of pink than I used last time.

Also, Avatar teaser trailer is out. The effects and scenery and everything look awesome, though I'm disappointed that we didn't get to see any actual acting, because that's the only part of it that I'm uncertain about - and it's a pretty major part! Oh well, cast/character photos will apparently be out soon, at least... but yeah, I'm still feeling very optimistic about this movie. ^_^

Character photos have also been released for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland movie, and I'm not very keen on them. On the other hand, the scenery looks incredible.

Cleaning out the My Music folder. There are an awful lot of songs I had no idea I had. Listening to everything at least once, and deleting ones that are either immediately awful, or so unremarkable I'm left with no memory of what I've been listening to for the last five minutes.

8:56 pm - E3
I thought ICO 3 "The Last Guardian" was going to be the only exciting thing at E3.

It wasn't.

GOLDEN SUN is coming out for DS! ^___^

Here's hoping it's a new game and not a remake. EDIT: Found poster/trailer/further discussion... it's a sequel. Descendants of the original characters. It looks kind of modern-fantasy-ish, from what they're wearing. Hmmm... O_o
EDIT EDIT: Should have thought of it myself, but someone pointed out... no Mars Adept in the team yet, so maybe it'll end up being a Proxan character? (They were the villains in the original game(s) and I always hoped there might be a good playable character in a sequel...)

(Last Guardian trailer is very very pretty, by the way, although it was just an updated-graphics version of the video that came out a few weeks ago. So not quite as exciting as I was hoping/expecting.)

It has occurred to me that prettymuch all my fandoms have something to look forward to.

Fullmetal Alchemist - weekly episodes, plus the manga is heading towards the climax
Avatar - live-action movie (yes, I am actually looking forward to this! At the very least it's going to be pretty.)
ICO series - new game! ♥
Studio Ghibli - Ponyo
Pokémon - Gold/Silver remakes! (yay nostalgia!)

Hmm, and I never actually watched the new series of Slayers yet. Wonder if that's finished now or if it's still going...?

9:49 pm - Username
I am strongly considering changing my username, because quite simply I was sick of "RocketJess" ages and ages ago but I had no idea what to change it to. Finally I have an idea, and I'm liking it more and more.

The thing is, I like using my own name (ie. Jess) but it's fairly indistinctive AND it's likely to be taken when I try to sign up for forum accounts. So I had the idea of looking up name origins. The name "Jessica" was first used by Shakespeare, though it probably originated with the biblical name "Iscah" which means "God is looking" or possibly "God's grace" (the exact translation varies on every site I looked at)... either way I think that's awesome, and I'd love to use it.

...on the downside, it seems so be taken on larger sites already. And trying to rename accounts everywhere would be a pain.

I'll keep on thinking about it....
